Participate from your homes

With your support to fund 1,000,000 x 12.5kg Mielie Meal bags has the ability to provide 5 million meals to those lower income households and shelters in the Townships across the country that have been impacted by the current national lockdown.

The impact of COVID-19 has and will unleash a food security crisis for poor communities across South Africa for months to come. For the millions of people that live from hand to mouth on small incomes, any disruption in earning and/or extra mouths to feed, as has been the case under the national lockdown, has dire consequences.

South Africa is in CRISIS!  More people could die of starvation than Covid-19 and food security for all is URGENTLY needed.  There have already been riots and deaths caused by food scarcity and fears of starvation.  What we eat affects our well-being and it is therefore critical that efforts to ensure that all in our country have access to food in the coming months. Our country will not successfully flatten the curve of infection unless people in the country have the ability to stay at home as much as possible knowing their basic necessity of food is taken care of.

Why Initially Mealie Meal?

Mealie meal is an efficient, simple and inexpensive strategy for supplying vitamins and minerals to the diets of large segments of the population. It is a staple that has a long shelf life; is traditionally consumed daily in many forms, including porridge, fermented drinks, infant foods, snacks and main dishes.

The mealie meal is a an anchor item in a food hamper. Collaborative civil society initiatives can build on this by calling to action local citizens in an areas to contribute to adding other food items to make up a complete hamper depending on the needs and preferences of the areas of reach within our country.

100% of contribution will be used for Mielie Meal. All administration and logistics costs funded by volunteers.   This campaign is an SA Muslim Covid-19 Response supported by Various NGOs from around the country.
